The Park Slope Civic Council’s newsletter Civic News has had a decades-long history informing members of news and events. Each monthly issue was mailed only to members; few people outside the organization knew about the newsletter and thus the Council.
When I was named editor and designer in late 2010, I worked with leadership to transform Civic News into a more effective outreach tool. We would now also distribute copies around the neighborhood to get new readers. Frequency would be reduced to quarterly, but with more pages. We also used color for the first time.
As designer, I added a cover that would entice new readers, then opened up the layout with better use of images and type to keep them reading. As editor, I wrote many articles (including the first cover story on our business forum) and solicited local leaders to write others. And I included many of my own photographs to add life to the publication.
Since that first new issue in Winter 2011, I continued to guide the newsletter to greater success, and worked to redesign and improve the nonprofit’s website.
